NanoTech & Art

The word nano is Greek for “dwarf” and it is one billionth of a meter. Dr. Gimzewski demonstrates the clear connection between nanotechnology and art by his discussion of Richard Feynmans work. He said: “The principles of physics, as far as I can see, do not speak against the possibility of maneuvering things atom by atom…. put the atoms down where chemist says, and so you have the substance” (Feynman). Art I a creative process and science is stereotypically much more rigid and organized. However, the placing of atoms in different places gives the chemist the role of an artist. He is able to manipulate and create something based purely on his own artistic perspective.

The new exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art brings about the connection of the art and an atom which nanotechnology is based on. This exhibition gives visitors the ability to manipulate and reorient atoms to put their own effect on it.  Just like the way an artist can create beauty in the physical world, nanotechnology users can do the same with atoms.

Even though artists are able to see the beauty that they have made, nanotechnology is not the same case. With the combination of nanotechnology and art, this will give mankind the ability to break through barriers that we never thought. This topic intrigued me so much because of the fact that we always talk about the dependency on technology that our society faces. Well, nanotechnology is just another advancement in technology will be crucial to our society because it can alternate extremely small products.
